Fake Meat Review
I’ve been a vegetarian for nearly 13 years now and for people who are just starting up (or have been vegetarian within the last four years), it’s much easier. When I started, there was only Gardenburger and Morningstar Mini Corn Dogs, needless to say, I have trouble eating either one. In fact, if I remember correctly, the bulk of my first year as a vegetarian was spent eating cheese...

Zak's (Ballard)
Last night, Michelle and I went to Zak’s in the neighborhood I call home (and what she calls the suburbs even though it’s in the city proper), Ballard.  Located on Market and next to Cupcake Royale, Zak’s specializes in burgers and shakes.  Despite their rasta-colored sign and licence plate decor (it reminded me of the formerly great restaurant California Burger in Lynnwood), it...

Best Burger in Seattle
the other night, michelle and i went to king’s hardware to eat. they definitely had some bangin’ burgers and it made me think of my favorite places in seattle to get burgers (does not include national chains). here are my notes: favs: 1. red mill 2. blue moon 3. hattie’s hat 4. king’s hardware 5. dick’s (haven’t had this shit in over a decade, but you can’t front on their ish) 6. the ram ...

I’ve been terrible at updating this, but over the next few weeks, I’ll be putting more recipes in. I just mastered really good vegan corned beef hash, so be on the look out for that and other stuff.

Vegan Sweet and Sour Chicken
One of the first things that I started missing when I became a vegetarian was really good sweet and sour chicken.  There are restaurants in Seattle, like Bamboo Garden, that have a decent take on it, but in the general scheme of things, it’s kinda crappy. Over the years, I developed this recipe, primarily because I discovered the sauce at Safeway one day.

Veggie Philly Cheesesteak
The idea of making a veggie/vegan Philly Cheesesteak may sound easy, but there’s a technique that you have to get down with, particularly the fact that you just don’t throw a bunch of cold or microwaved vegetables into a bun and call it a day.  You have to finesse those fixins.  The other part is understanding that if you want to have a semi-healthy sandwich, there’s no way in...

Mexican Pizza (Sort of)
Taco Bell is the creator of some of the greatest bastardizations of Mexican food.  The fucking 7 Layer Burrito?  Check.  Nachos Bell Grande?  Awesome!  Their now discontinued Taco Salad?  Muy classico.  One of my favorite menu items is their longstanding Mexican Pizza.  No doubt an attempt to cater to gringos everywhere who are generally afraid of anything remotely ethnic, Taco Bell’s...

Vegetarian Lumpia
A Filipino staple, lumpia is one of the few ethnic foods that I’ve seen white people eat en masse.  In fact, I’m fairly certain that if Filipino culture is synonymous with three things it would be the following: Imelda Marcos, getting caught cheating in the 1991 Little League World Series and lumpia.  Anyway, a few years ago, I ventured out by taking my mom’s recipe and slightly...
